KeySIGNBASE, a road sign asset manager, links the UK’s leading KeySIGN traffic sign design system with Microsoft’s Access database and the GIS capabilities of AutoCAD. It provides a fully functional front end to a database enabling easy input of new sign records, search tools and maintenance scheduling. The Highway Agency recognises the need for the good maintenance of road signing in its standard laid down in “The Inspection and Maintenance of Traffic Signs on Motorway and All-purpose Trunk Roads”, part of the “Design Manual for Roads and Bridges”. These standards are increasingly being adopted by responsible Highway Authorities.

KeySIGNBASE, based on a carefully designed relational database, provides a detailed and easy to use interface. New signing can be added directly from the KeySIGN design drawings, and existing assets added on-site using the GPS device interface. The information that can be held for each site and sign face is comprehensive, even to the level of detail of destination and route text; whether a site has a safe stopping place; or whether a particular sign face has a risk of being obscured by foliage growth.

Organisations are increasingly finding they must ensure that the facilities they provide are safe; that they carry out the functions they were designed to; and that they are able to prove that inspections, maintenance and repairs have been carried out in accordance with approved procedures. This is particularly important with regard to signing on the highway. KeySIGNBASE provides for fully detailed record keeping.
 
KeySIGN sign face designs can be imported to create each record automatically. Information such as the destinations and routes, the x-height and overall sign dimensions, and colours used. Sign face design drawings can be viewed right within KeySIGNBASE, without the need for KeySIGN, but if this is available the drawing can be re-opened for printing or redesign as required.
 
         
  Comprehensive Data   Scheduled Maintenance  
 
Complete, one-stop record keeping on any aspect of signs, posts and lighting is included. Multiple sign faces can be recorded at any location, and KeySIGNBASE can store historical information in case of litigation.
 
Recent trends to litigate, whenever there is an opportunity to blame others for accidents, make it vitally important to ensure that signs making up the traffic ‘signing system’ are visible, kept in good condition, mean what they say, and are replaced when damaged. KeySIGNBASE provides for maintenance and inspection schedules to be created for any set of signs or sign types, for example a replacement program for signs no longer prescribed (outside of the ‘Savings’ period in TSRGD). Scheduled maintenance can be set for a single sign, all signs or any set of signs selected using the Search Tool (see below), and once in place KeySIGNBASE generates due items and can be used to create work tickets and site plans.
 
         
  Ad-hoc Maintenance   Route Studies  
 
Ad-Hoc maintenance can also be tracked as in the fault report of a failed lighting unit as shown in the image. A full audit trail is kept for each sign record as each maintenance item is generated (scheduled), or manually added, and as each is signed off as complete or any other progress recorded.
 
Destinations and Routes are automatically imported for the KeySIGN design drawings. This allows for easy analysis of the ‘Signing System’ that has usually grown organically over many years, and for its continuing effectiveness to be reviewed. Using the Search Tool (see below) this information can be searched on and signs containing specific destinations or routes plotted quickly and easily on a map base.
 
         
  Search Tool   Work Ticket Production  
 
A sophisticated search tool is provided which allows for effective ‘data-mining’ to maximize value, so that subsets of signs can be selected, for analysis aimed at focussing resources efficiently. This tool can be used to search for any combination of fields including ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ and ‘NOT’ logic between search filters. The results of any search can be used to create packages of work (maintenance or inspection), or for any other further analysis.
 
Any information for all or selected subsets of signs can be output to produce detailed work instruction sheets. Required fields for any specific report type can be saved for easy re-use later and printed as a standard format report or exported to a spreadsheet for addition of any other information as needed.
