State-of-the-art CAD software for incredibly productive roadway junction
designing, planning, and operations.

NEXUS is the ultimate junction design solution for new construction and rehabilitation projects offering vehicle operations, geometric design, and safety performances together in one comprehensive package.

With the patent pending Vehicle Envelope Method of design, NEXUS incorporates all the key elements in the junction design process including design vehicles, capacity conditions, sight lines, conflict points, and conceptual grading - providing instant feedback so engineers can quickly and easily produce highly effective and safety oriented junction layouts.

With 65% savings in overall design costs, NEXUS allows for the design and evaluation of many junction concepts in a fraction of the time compared to traditional or manual computer-aided drafting and designing.

  NEXUS Highlights
Junction Layout Designing: Dynamically generate junctions using any or a combination of the 4 different methods: Lane Configuration; Capacity Conditions; Leg Templates; junction Templates.   Junction Geometry Generation: Ability to define bay taper ratio and auxiliary taper type, draw roundabouts, and add bicycle lanes.
Design Vehicle Paths and Movement: Use the patent pending Vehicle Envelope Method to generate junction geometry. Ability to define complex corner geometry with design vehicle movement.   Sight Lines Checking: Toggle the display of sight lines on or off for a selected junction design. Generate sight triangles for left and right turns with user-defined stopping sight distances or from AASHTO 2004.
Conflict Point Analysis: Ability to draw: Conflict Points; Tally of Crossing Points; Merge Points; Diverge Points; and Total Points. Graphically display conflict point diagram with colour coded points.    Design Grading Features: Ability to create a 3D grading model of a junction with vertical profiles designed for each of the alignments. Draw basic contour lines based on the contour intervals for evaluating drainage patterns.

  NEXUS in Detail
Advanced Junction Designing   Dynamic Updates and Edits to the Junction

Quickly and easily generate junction layouts with schematic pavement markings and edges using one or a combination of methods including: defining the schematic lane configuration; importing capacity data; selecting a pre-defined leg template; or using a junction template. Key junction elements are all included in the first cut layout.

Edit and refine the basic junction design right from the initial layout. Make changes to the alignments of legs, lanes, and lane configurations as you design. Use powerful tools to add and edit individual junction components including: bicycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, vehicle storage lengths, auxiliary lanes, stop lines, median and corner islands.

Work with Vehicle Capacity Conditions    Design Junction Corner Geometry

NEXUS lets you initialize a design based on capacity data by updating the junction from capacity conditions imported from HCS (Highway Capacity Software) data or other manually inputted information from other traffic analysis software.

Dynamically configure corner geometry types for Arc, Biarc, and Triarc. Entry and Exit Tapers can be added to any of these types. Unique to NEXUS, you also can design corner geometry with the patent pending Vehicle Envelop Method using vehicle turning movement to govern the slip lane edge of the corner island envelope ensuring that the design works for the specified vehicle.

Design Junction Control Radius    Evaluate Vehicle Movement in the Junction

Define the control radius to set a junction’s median opening length. You can also design with the patent pending Vehicle Envelop Method by using a vehicle swept path from a turning simulation. Design vehicle movements can also be generated to govern the nose median position and to check issues with opposing left turn movements.

You can easily evaluate vehicle movements by displaying AutoTURN compatible design and checking vehicle simulations within a NEXUS junction. By setting the turning radius, speed, entry and exit lanes, and the design vehicle – movements are easily performed for checking your designs.

Evaluate Driver Sight Lines for Safety  Conflict Point Analysis for Safer Junctions

Quickly assess the impact of sight lines on a junction for right-of-way or landscaping based on sight triangles, checking left turn on major streets, and at critical points. For sight triangles, you can generate them by manually inputting specified stopping distances or use a convenient lookup tool for AASHTO 2004 Cases A, B, and C.

With NEXUS, you can determine the number of different conflict points in a junction where vehicle paths cross, merge, and even diverge. From the conflict point diagram, you can see where the potential areas of accidents could occur helping you assess the safety performance of your junction.

Design Grading in 3 Dimensions    Control it all with Design Manager

See and design junction grading in 3D! With NEXUS, you can develop a grading model and establish the drainage pattern in 3D even in base CAD applications. Vertical profiles provide immediate feedback on cross slopes and alignment slopes. As well, the developed alignments can be exported to a LandXML format for transitions to vertical CAD products.

Using the NEXUS Design Manager feature, you can easily save, manage, recall, and compare multiple junction design iterations within a single CAD drawing without the need for CAD level and layer management. This creates a much simpler design process by helping the preliminary design move quickly forward to the approval and final design stage.
